Our friends at Google AdSense have passed along a few tips on how best to take advantage of Super Bowl and Winter Olympics traffic in the coming weeks, and we’re excited to share them with you!

When to Write:

According to Google’s data, searches and social sharing for Super Bowl and Winter Olympics content started picking up in late December. People typically begin seeking out and sharing articles about these kinds of major social events up to 6 weeks in advance.

But you’re not too late to take advantage of the buzz. In fact, Google predicts that the largest spike in interest will occur 2 weeks ahead of the events… in other words, expect these topics to take off starting next week! Major social events like these generate a ton of public interest, making them shareable to a wide audience. So, authors who get their Super Bowl and Olympics content out there quickly and share it on social media will be well-positioned to benefit from potentially viral shares.

Advertisers are also preparing for these events by increasing spending on ads, meaning higher CPMs in the following categories before and during the Super Bowl and the Winter Olympic Games:

  • Autos
  • Entertainment and Media
  • Food and Cooking
  • Alcoholic beverages (particularly beer)
  • Holidays and Celebrations

And especially high CPMS in these topics this February:

  • Personal Finance
  • Technology
  • Travel and Places

What to Write:

If you’re interested in the Super Bowl or Olympics and you want to try surfing the social wave, these are a few great examples of topics Google expects to do well:

  • Bronco and Seahawk team and player biographies and trivia
  • Super Bowl recipes and party tips
  • Info on halftime show performers (Bruno Mars and the Red Hot Chili Peppers)
  • Superbowl ad commentary
  • Sochi travel tips
  • Olympics fashion
  • Olympic athlete and team biographies and trivia

Best of luck and happy Hubbing!
